At SGU we believe people are the difference. Every field visit, every report and every improvement is powered by the calibre and character of our team. Today we are pleased to introduce one of our newest additions, Senior Electrical Engineer Andrés Vélez. With more than ten years of solar experience and a clear passion for safety, Andrés brings knowledge, pragmatism and a team first mindset to our growing organisation.
We asked Andrés a few questions to get to know him better.

What first drew you to SGU?
What stood out to me was SGU’s ambition to be at the top of the UK’s O&M market. That level of growth and intent gave me confidence that my ten plus years of solar experience could genuinely contribute. I want to support the organisation’s ambitions and help our field teams work safer and more proactively, and I can see a place for that here.
What do you think makes the team at SGU stand out?
People care. They care about the work and the service delivered to clients. There is transparency and a real eagerness to get better. I like the family orientated feel and, as far as I have seen, everyone is really nice.
What's a memorable project or challenge you have enjoyed tackling?
One of the most challenging aspects of my role is stopping work when safety is compromised. It's never easy. Timelines, pressure and expectations make intervention uncomfortable, and you can feel like others may not appreciate your decision in that moment. But when the project ends and everyone goes home safely, it feels absolutely worth it.
If you could learn a completely new skill, what would it be?
Surfing. I would love to learn it properly!
A book, podcast or TV show you would recommend to the team?
The Law of Innocence by Michael Connelly.
How do you usually start your day to set yourself up for success?
I shower, make the bed and have breakfast. If I am not leaving early, I make sure I spend time with my children and partner before I go out to conquer the world.
What's something colleagues might be surprised to learn about you?
I am very competitive, especially in sport. I love to win. So if anyone fancies losing at go karting, please let me know.
We are delighted to have Andrés join SGU. His safety focus, practical mindset and desire to continuously improve align perfectly with our culture and ambition.
Because we care.
