One of the biggest misconceptions about solar energy is that once a site is built and commissioned, it simply takes care of itself.

Panels generate electricity. Inverters do their job. Monitoring software keeps an eye on everything. Job done. It's an understandable assumption, especially when compared to other forms of power generation. Solar has fewer moving parts, lower routine maintenance requirements and a reputation for reliability.
But reliable does not mean maintenance free.
In reality, the best performing solar assets are rarely the ones that receive the least attention. They are the ones that are looked after consistently, with small issues identified and resolved before they have the chance to affect performance.
Performance naturally changes over time
Every solar site is exposed to the elements every single day.
Rain, wind, fluctuating temperatures, dust, vegetation, wildlife and ageing electrical components all have an impact. Individually, these factors may seem insignificant, but over time they can reduce efficiency, increase wear and create faults that are not immediately obvious. A slight drop in generation may not raise any alarms, a loose electrical connection may continue to operate for weeks before becoming a problem, an inverter might still be running, but not at the level it should be. Without regular inspections and proactive maintenance, these small changes often go unnoticed until they begin affecting energy production or require more extensive repairs.
Monitoring is only part of the picture
Modern monitoring platforms are an excellent tool, but they are exactly that: a tool.
They provide valuable data and alerts, helping operators understand how a site is performing.
What they cannot do is replace engineering experience. Monitoring systems may highlight that something has changed. An engineer helps determine why it has changed.
A thermal inspection might reveal overheating before a component fails. A routine site visit may uncover water ingress, damaged cable management or early signs of corrosion that no monitoring platform could detect. Technology and engineering expertise work best together, not independently.
Great O&M is about prevention, not reaction
The most successful maintenance strategies are not built around responding to failures.
They are built around preventing them. Routine inspections, planned maintenance and ongoing performance analysis help identify developing issues before they become costly outages. This approach not only protects energy generation but also extends the life of valuable equipment and helps asset owners avoid unnecessary repair costs.
It is far more effective to tighten a loose connection during a scheduled visit than replace damaged equipment following an unexpected failure.
Looking after your investment
A utility scale solar site represents a significant long term investment. Protecting that investment requires more than waiting for an alarm to appear on a screen. It requires experienced people who understand what healthy equipment looks like, how performance should change over time and when something does not quite add up. That is why the phrase “fit and forget” does not reflect the reality of modern solar operations. The most reliable sites are not forgotten. They are cared for.
