Please welcome Niall, our new Senior Engineer. With a passion for art, a talent for rebuilding cars, and a knack for fixing almost anything, he’s truly our very own ‘Mr. Fix It.’

Niall developed a passion for engineering early on, rebuilding cars and studying physics and mathematics. After completing his education, he spent time managing an international art gallery in Mayfair and working for an art and antiques company in New York. His career shifted to construction, where he project-managed house restorations and became a fully qualified electrician. With a growing interest in renewables, Niall joined Lightsource as a rooftop installations expert and worked with major solar O&M companies while navigating personal challenges. After two and a half years at Res, he joins SGU, bringing with him a wealth of experience in both renewable energy and restoration. Outside of work, Niall continues to restore historic vehicles and his home in Norfolk, all while raising two teenagers.

1.     What’s something unique about you that most people don’t know?

There are quite a few surprising things about me, but one of the less expected is that I was once an accomplished bagpiper.

2.     If you could have any superpower, what would it be?

I like to think of myself as having a superpower, perfectly captured by a baseball cap a colleague gave me last year, which proudly states, “I fix things.” From everyday problems to musical instruments, there’s very little I can’t repair.

3.     What attracted you to this role?

The people, their energy, and the directness of communication.

4.     What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

Alex Wengraf, the Old Master paintings dealer, once told me, “Principles cost you money.” I’m still paying the price!

5.     If you could have dinner with any famous person, who would it be and why?

Could you arrange a dinner with Annie Lennox? I’ve always admired her as a phenomenal performer and brilliant musician, and I must admit, I’m also fond of her style. Perhaps it’s my Scottish roots coming through!

6.     Any productivity hacks you swear by?

As the meerkat says, “Simples.” Do the job right, and do it just once.
